Old Testament 101
David Cranson RA Dining Hall
The Bible is not a children's book. Countless wars have been fought over its contents. Meanwhile, some people say that this book taught them how to love - really love - their neighbor as themselves. It is easily the best selling book in the history of the world. Over 150,000 copies are sold or given away each day! The aim of this class is to move past the "Sunday School" version of the Bible that so many of us have heard and see the Bible through an adult's eyes. This is Bible 101.
OT Survey: Genesis
James Russell Sherwood Chapel
In this Old Testament course, after looking at the Bible as a whole, we will consider the the beginning, the fall, and some of the most exciting stories in the Bible concerning the very first believers.
What’s New? - An Introduction to the New Testament
Paula Waters Jordan Hall
We will explore the background, structure, and message of the section of the Bible called the New Testament—and how it became scripture.
People Like Us!
Jerrie Shepard-Matney Mitchell Living Room
Gideon, Jabez, Joshua, Solomon, Jeremiah, Ruth, Tamara, Anna, Peter, Simeon, and many more: The Old Testament heroes, the disciples of Christ, the early church worshipers - they really were people like us, ordinary people whom God called to do extraordinary things. Come to learn about their struggles, their prayers, their lives of faith and obedience. These are our spiritual ancestors, and have a lot to tell us.
Starting Point (2 sections)
1: Paula Waters (1) Jordan Hall
2: Jerrie Shepard-Matney(1) Mitchell Living Room
How can I use my Bible? What should I do for devotions at home? How can I best worship? What do Christians believe? These are some of the questions we will explore as we consider how to get started in a life of faith. Graduation requirement for class of 2013 and beyond.

Doubt and Faith In the Bible
Alex Sinclair RA Dining Hall, Seaside Room
What does the Bible say about doubt? Is doubting okay? Is it necessary for a strong faith? We will explore these questions, among others, with conversation and the use of scripture and videos.
This course is designed to address some persistent questions:
"What really is important in this life?"

Who am I?

Ellen Dill RA Dining Hall
This course takes a look at you! How do you learn best? What is your personality like? What are your spiritual gifts? How might God be preparing you to do something you love with your life? Be prepared to share a lot of who you are personally with the other members of this class, and think about where you will go with your future!

God’s Great Shore and Sea

Bob Jope with Drew Sinclair RA Dining Hall, Seaside Room
One of the most awe-inspiring ways in which we come to know God is through the examination of the world around us. This course will guide students through an exploration of the ecosystems local to the southern coast of Maine, with particular attention to how God calls us to interact with the environment. Time will also be spent in examining portions of the Bible related to these matters. Students will participate actively in discussion, read a textbook relating to these topics, will travel by canoe, will learn to identify local plants and animals and will touch some of those plants and animals, and have an extra session during the Ft. Williams trip.

Influences - What’s going in and what’s coming out?
David Wadsworth RA Dining Hall Sunrise Rm
Do you think about the words to songs as you hear them? Are you desensitized to things you’ve seen on TV over and over? Do you notice when your own speech, behavior, or thoughts are more like something someone else might say or do than you usually do? How does that happen, why does that happen, and how can you recognize it and offer an alternative?

The Language of God: Science and Faith

David Wadsworth RA Dining Hall Sunrise Rm
We live in a technologically advanced, dynamic, and ever changing world. Information is freely expressed and shared, facts are often diluted, and our lives/beliefs are widely influenced on a daily basis. This course is designed to ask several challenging questions pertaining to science and faith, and to address these questions head on and with an open mind. We will draw from several literary references, including information from authors such as C.S. Lewis and Charles Darwin. However, our discussion and learning will be rooted in the work of Francis S. Collins, Old Testament narrative, and of course, that Jesus dude. “The Language of God” was written by Collins - a world renowned geneticist and former atheist - and it provides an alternative to conventional belief of either Creationism OR Science. This alternative is called “BioLogos”, and we will discuss the six basic principles of this belief structure. Through this open discussion, interactive exercises, internal reflection and prayer, and private expression - in the form of a collage/poster or journal - we will document our two journey

What In The World Is God Doing?

Steve Youd Holt Living Room
When we look around the world, we see some pretty tough stuff:
- people losing their homes, or their lives, to a hurricane or tsunami
- little children being abused or ignored
- persons being widowed or orphaned because of AIDS
- people going to bed hungry (again)
and our response is often: "Where in the world is God?"
Through the use of video clips, guest presenters and some good old-fashioned dialogue,
we will seek some answers to a very important question.
Come find God with us!

Don’t Wanna Waste My Life

Alex Sinclair, Steve Youd, and Drew Sinclair Holt Living Room
We look at the shootings in Newtown, and we look at the shooter (who was young and blessed with great brains), and many will say: "What a waste of a life."
"What is it that God expects from us?"
AND
"How can we move in a direction that honors God?"
Through the use of discussion and a few video clips,
we will seek to address the desire most of us have:
"Don't wanna waste my life."
This course is especially recommended for anyone who feels they may be called to professional ministry or mission work, but is open to all who want to learn to serve.

Overcoming Obstacles

James Russell Sherwood Chapel
Everyone has challenges in life. Sometimes it starts at home; sometimes it’s at school; sometimes they come from friends, from media or music, from substances we crave, or relationships we need or want to control. We will look at ways to manage these out of control things - with God’s help.
